Encaustic Rust Series #7

This one is on an 8"x8" cradled birch panel with mounted Rives BFK paper, a watercolor underpainting and embedded rust on paper. I do need to learn how to photograph them better so you can see the depth.  It has several layers and I think the pic looks kind of flat.  It's not!

Deb, when you say "embedded rust", what do you mean exactly?
I have been following your rust series with fascination. They are fabulous.

Hi Christiane. So glad you're liking them. The "embedded rust on paper" should probably read "embedded paper with rust." What I did is put the rusty stuff (washers, nails, wire, etc.) on the paper and mist it with water. Once the rust was on on the paper, I let it dry completely, then cut it into strips which I dipped into the encaustic medium. Once the medium hardened, I cut the strips into pieces. I then embedded them in the layers of the piece by dipping them in some more medium and placing them on the piece. Once several were placed, I fused them, then covered them with a layer of tinted medium. I think I did 4 layers of the pieces to get the depth.

Thanks so much Bonnie. I've been in kind of a slump. My brother was found dead on November 12th and I haven't been able to paint since. I'm working up to it though. Finally getting itchy to get my studio in order. I've got a few more in the rust series that are not finished yet. Your post was just what I needed to hear. Think I'll get go play with some wax! Thanks!

You've got some lovely textures going on in this rust series.

There are a couple of tricks to get more depth in your photographs... but most of the ones I know about only work if you're using a digital SLR. What camera are you using and what sort of settings does it have?

Eric, thanks for your kind words. I'd love to know your tricks for getting more depth. I'm using a Canon PowerShot SD790 IS. I'm a complete novice and it shows! Here's a link to the specs. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Your work is very interesting to me; your imagination and creativity show well. I just read your comment about your brother; I'm sorry to hear about your loss and hope you are doing okay.

Deb, my husband is a photographer who uses the DSLR camera...his suggestion is for you to use an off camera light to help show the depth of your work. (Something off to the side of your piece) He wasn't familiar with your type of camera but suggested no flash going into your painting because it would flatten your image. Don't know if this will help you or not; but I hope so.
Sincerely,
Linda
