Happy Birthday America!

America the Beautiful

O beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.

O beautiful, for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw;
Confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law!

O beautiful, for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness, and ev’ry gain divine!

O beautiful, for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea!

A truly beautiful song that SHOULD be our national anthem instead of that awful drivel you hear at the ballgames. When I run for President, that will be my platform!!

I totally agree, Nick! Might just have to vote for you...as long as you promise to hold a worshhop for all of us at the White House! LOL!

Seriously, this is one of the most beautiful songs ever. Breaks my heart that it's not the national anthem. I use to play it, all kinds of arrangements. I'll dig one up if I can and send an mp3. Someday search out Jaco Pastorius' version, that might have been the moment it dawned on me just how much it means to me.
